Objectives of the project:
- To take care of deprived and malnourished children from Villa Duarte, giving priority to food and nutrition;
- Medical follow-up of their ratio size/weight to ensure them better health and development.
- Training of mothers to favor at the same time their development and their children’s one.

Activities:
- Distribution of meals to children twice a day;
- Support for children from Monday to Friday, follow-up after school;
- Health care to children according to their needs;
- Training of mothers to favor their empowerment (literacy, nutrition, hygiene).

Duration of the project: from January to December 2006.

History of the project: the project saw the light in 2002, in the framework of the Vincentian Family Campaign “Globalization of charity: struggle against hunger”. After having done a survey, the AIC Villa Duarte Group decided to offer specific support to children from Villa Duarte. Because they were in such a state of malnutrition that it entailed school failure. The project does not only offer health and nutrition support to the most affected children, but also aims at strengthening nutrition, hygiene and literacy education of the mothers.

Beneficiaries: 80 children between 0 and 5. The project ensures at the same time a well-balanced diet for the children and training of their mothers (literacy).

Volunteers: 13 volunteers from AIC Villa Duarte Group.

Participation of beneficiaries: mothers give of their time to keep the center and prepare meals.

Total budget of the project: 20.395,00 €
Financed: 9.335,00 €
To be financed: 11.040,00 €

Local Contribution: time of AIC volunteers, participation of mothers who commit themselves in preparing meals, keeping the house and having training.
